I was asked to respond as a ‘career agony aunt’ to the Next Step career crisis section. The question asked was about considered a career change in their 50’s. As this is one of my areas of expertise and what I researched for my doctoral studies, I was delighted to offer my advice.

Some of the key advice was

  1. think about the skills you have, what you enjoy and what you want to use going forward

  2. complete a skills audit

  3. take to people in roles that you find interesting to see what they do and how they got there

  4. look at linkedin or talk to people who your know (and trust) for ideas of other roles

  5. do some reflective work to think about your values and what makes you happy

  6. consider a portfolio career if you want to try out something new whilst doing a role (possibly part time) whilst you are experimenting

  7. Give the decision some time – it is important to the career change right as you may not be making many future career changes
